All the gates of Farakka were already open, there is no danger of flooding

Rajshahi Water Development Board said that there is no danger of flash flood in the next two to three days in Farakka Bhati area including Chapainawabganj-Rajshahi. It is even reported that the 109 gates of Farakka were already open.

Rajshahi Water Development Board Executive Engineer Arifur Rahman Ankur confirmed this information on Monday (August 26) evening.

He said that the rate at which the water is rising, there is no danger of flooding in the region in the next two to three days. The water of Padma river is still far below the danger level.

Engineer Arifur Rahman Ankur also said that the gates of Farakka were open since the beginning of monsoon. Now the water level in Padma is less than what it was 15 days ago. So there is no risk of major flooding.

Several experts said that every gate of Farakka Dam is open during the monsoon season. But its size is like 6 inches. Even when the dam is open, there is variation in the water level in the upstream and downstream areas (in the river). When the water level rises upstream and the feeder canal fills, creating flood conditions, the Farakka gates are raised to 6 inches and fully opened. This increases the risk of danger in the furnace.

According to the Water Development Board sources, the water level in the Padma river in Chapainawabganj has increased by 3 cm in the last 24 hours at the Pankha point of the Padma. The width of Padma is 22.5 meters. At present the water level is 20.48 meters. Apart from Padma River, two other rivers in Chapainawabganj, Mahananda and Purnabhava have the same rate of water increase.

In Mahananda, the latitude is 20.55 meters. At present the water level in Mahananda river is 18.49 meters. Purnabhabaya Bipatsima is 21.55 meters. At present the water level in this river is 18.55 meters.
