In the capital's Sayedabad, drivers are protesting by blocking the road to demand a reduction in the daily deposit of CNG-powered auto-rickshaws. After 9 am on Tuesday (August 20), they blocked the road near the Janpath intersection in Sayedabad. This caused severe traffic jam on the road from Jatrabari to Gulistan and Jatrabari.
CNG autorickshaw drivers said that the owners collect Tk 1,250 from them daily. But the daily deposit fixed by the government is Tk 900. As such, the owners charge 350 taka more. They have blocked the road demanding to collect the government fixed deposit.
They also said that many times the owners collect deposits from two people in a day. A challan from morning to evening took 900 rupees from him. Rented to another person at night. He took 700 and a half rupees from him.
Their complaint is that the owners are exploiting the drivers. Auto-rickshaw drivers have to pay the fuel (gas) cost, after that they have nothing left due to depositing so much, they have to struggle to run their families.
