Awami League leader in Bochaganj remanded for two days


Dinajpur's Bochaganj Upazila Awami League general secretary Afsar Ali has been remanded by the court for two days.

Bochaganj Judicial Magistrate Court Judge Joy Kishore Nag granted two-day remand on Wednesday afternoon.

Dinajpur Court Code Inspector Liaquat Ali confirmed the news of remand being granted.

Faisal Mostak, a student of Haji Mohammad Danesh University of Science and Technology, filed a case on behalf of anti-discrimination students at Bochaganj police station last Saturday.

According to the statement, students took out a peaceful procession from Setabganj Government College during the anti-discrimination student movement on July 18. At that time, on the orders of Upazila Chairman Afsar Ali, some leaders and activists of the Chhatra League ambushed the procession with indigenous weapons. Beating, seriously injuring, threatening to disappear and molesting the girls. Due to their threats, the students could not even go to any medical center in the area for treatment.

In this case, 24 named accused of Ejahar and 70-75 unidentified persons including former Minister of State for Shipping and Dinajpur-2 Constituency Member of Parliament Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Minister's Private Secretary Ahmadul Bashar were charged.

Upazila Parishad Chairman and Upazila Awami League General Secretary Afsar Ali was hiding with his family in a nearby upazila since August 5. Some time before Saturday evening, he came to the police station with his wife and children to file a house vandalism case.

At that time, the anti-discrimination students requested the officer-in-charge of the police station to carry out impartial investigation in every case in the presence of the chairman and said that this is not the country of Awami League, it is independent Bangladesh. After hearing such words from the students, Afsar Ali attacked them and threatened the students. The moment the students started shouting slogans, some other students also came from outside and demanded the chairman's resignation.

Handmic later announced his verbal resignation and said that he would resign in writing within seven days. At that time the members of the army responsible for controlling the law and order situation in Bochaganj upazila were also present. In the case filed by the students, the chairman was arrested and sent to jail at 11:30 on Saturday night.
