Bangkok may go under water

By the end of this century, Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, may be under water. A senior official of the country's Climate Change Office expressed the fear on Wednesday.

The official said Thailand may have to consider moving the capital to Bangkok due to rising sea levels.

Pavich Kesavaong, deputy director-general of the government's Department of Climate Change and Environment, warned that Bangkok will not be able to adapt to the global warming path it is currently on.

Referring to the rise in global temperature from pre-industrial levels, he said, “I think we are already over 1.5 degrees Celsius. Now we have to go back and think about adaptation. If we stay in our (current) situation, It is conceivable that Bangkok will be under water.'

Pavich said that the government is thinking about shifting the capital. But the matter is 'much more complicated.'
