Belgian university cut ties with Israel

Belgium's Ghent University has severed ties with all Israeli universities and research institutes. The decision was taken by the educational institution due to the institution's involvement with Jerusalem's human rights policy. This decision was announced by the university on Friday (May 31). Strong pro-Palestinian protests continue at Ghent University. From there, demands to take action against Israel arose. Parts of the university campus have been occupied by angry students since early May.

An investigative committee at the university, known as Ugent, found links between Israeli academic institutions and the Israeli government, military or security services. Concern has also been expressed in a statement about this. The university's investigation, citing a World Court ruling, said the humanitarian situation in Gaza had worsened in recent months.

Eugent cut ties with three Israeli firms two weeks ago. The university has partnerships with 18 Israeli academic institutions.

Last week, two other Belgian universities announced changes to their cooperation policies with Israeli institutions. Meanwhile, the University of Antwerp said it will continue ongoing research projects with Israeli institutions. But new projects will be suspended.
