The Kansas City Chiefs became the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls in two decades this past February when they defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22.
Prior to the Chiefs claiming the Lombardi Trophy for the second consecutive season, there had been a nearly 20-year drought since the New England Patriots last won two Super Bowls in a row in 2003 and 2004.

Since the Super Bowl began following the 1966-67 season, there have been nine occasions in which a team repeated as Super Bowl champions two seasons in a row. The Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, Patriots, and Chiefs have all won back-to-back Super Bowls, with the Steelers doing so twice.
The Chiefs, however, are looking to do something that has never been done before in NFL history — win three straight Super Bowls.

The Patriots are one team that came close to doing so under former head coach Bill Belichick. Belichick and the Patriots advanced to three straight Super Bowls from 2017-19, but lost the Super Bowl in 2018.
While Belichick fell short of the feat, he does believe this Chiefs team is capable of becoming the first team in history to three-peat.
“It’s tough to win three Super Bowls in a row, but if anybody can do it it’s probably Kansas City, but it won’t be easy … They’re gonna have some tough opponents through the course of the season and the playoffs,” Belichick said on the Pat McAfee Show. “Andy Reid will have them ready to go and I think they’ll score more than they did last year. We’ll see if they can hold up defensively.”

The Chiefs, and especially quarterback Patrick Mahomes, have been clear that the goal is to win that elusive third straight Super Bowl.
“Next year in New Orleans, we’re gonna do it again,” Mahomes said on the “Impaulsive with Logan Paul” podcast in May. “I’m putting it on the table. We’re gonna do it again. I’m telling you now.”
Mahomes is the reason for the Chiefs to have this belief, as Kansas City has become one of the most dominant teams with Mahomes at quarterback. Since Mahomes took over as the full-time starter, the Chiefs have won every division title and made the AFC Championship Game in every season. They have made the Super Bowl in four of the last five seasons, winning three of them.
Even when the Chiefs are trailing by a significant margin, or not playing their best, there is always a belief that Mahomes can lead them to a win. The Chiefs played well below their standard at points of the 2023 regular season, and still managed to win the Super Bowl once again.
It is certainly not easy to return to the Super Bowl, but Mahomes makes it look effortless. If there is any team capable of pulling off a three-peat in the near future, it would be the Chiefs.
