Brad Keselowski Debunks NASCAR Coercion Claims As Civil War Begins

RFK Racing co-owner and driver Brad Keselowski has firmly refuted allegations that NASCAR coerced teams into approving the new charter agreement. The narrative surrounding these claims has ignited what some call a civil war within the sport, with Keselowski stepping forward to set the record straight.

According to reports by the Associated Press, NASCAR allegedly employed strong-arm tactics to secure team approvals for the new charter agreement.

However, Keselowski has challenged this, asserting that the teams were not forced into signing.

“Well, I don’t necessarily know where that’s coming from. Forced is a really strong term, but we are getting to a spot where it’s important to get these things settled,” Keselowski stated in an interview with Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports (below).

“We’re glad that the economics are improved and to go with where the media landscape has moved.”

The heart of the contention lies with the ongoing negotiations and the role of media rights in the sport. The recent $7.7 billion media rights deal was instrumental in the charter agreement’s formation, becoming the financial ecosystem that NASCAR relies upon.

Keselowski highlighted this: “We’re certainly glad to see the sport perpetuate, you know right now the sport lives and dies off the media rights deal.

“There’s no getting around that. So, when the media rights deal got done this winter, that was a big, big deal for the sport, and now you’re seeing the dominoes falling behind that, but don’t forget what the first domino is.”

Despite most teams signing the agreement, 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports have failed to do so – something that NASCAR star Bubba Wallace wasn’t overly happy about.

Keselowski noted: “Certainly, respect their [23XI, FRM] decision-making ability…You know, for us, we felt it was right to do a deal and move forward.”

For RFK Racing, the agreement was seen as a move to ensure stability and forward momentum in the sport.

Wallace was vocal to the press over the scenario he’s found himself in following this decision:

“I know my process has been kind of going hand in hand with the charter agreements.

“So, it’s frustrating to see where we’re at because that impacts my life, my livelihood, and everything moving forward for my future.”

This intra-sport discord is not just a fleeting controversy; it bears significant implications for NASCAR’s future. The orchestration and success of the media rights deal have been touted as foundational, ensuring the sustainability and growth of the sport.
