Bridge collapse in Brahmanbaria, Kasba-Akhaura communication closed

Many areas in Akhaura Upazila of Brahmanbaria have been flooded due to the opening of Dambur hydropower project dam in Tripura state of India. Due to the collapse of several bridges, road communication between Akhaura and Kasba Upazila has been closed. Another bridge on this road is under serious threat. In addition, regional roads have been broken in at least eight places in Akhaura Upazila. As a result, road communication in those areas has been completely cut off.

On Friday (August 23), a total of 100 families have already taken shelter in local shelters in Akhaura. At least 500 families in 34 villages of four unions bordering Akhaura are waterlogged. Paddy land, vegetable land and various fish enclosures in those areas have been damaged. Apart from this, the Akhaura-Agartala road connection and the import-export trade and passenger crossing through the land port are still closed.

It is known on the ground that one side wall of the bridge at the intersection of Devgram and Nayadil village of Mogra union on Akhaura-Kasba regional road collapsed on Thursday night. Later, the local public representatives blocked the road by cutting trees there to prevent erosion.

Residents said that the bridge at the entrance and exit of Devagram area of ​​Akhaura town is also in danger. The ground moved from one side of the newly constructed bridge. In this situation, traffic has been stopped on one side. If it collapses, the communication system of Devgram residents will be totally disabled. The power supply has been cut off due to the earth moving from under the electric poles next to the two collapsed and endangered bridges. A source of Upazila Palli Vidyut Samiti said that as a result some areas have become without electricity.

Akhaura Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Ghazala Parveen Ruhi said that he is aware of the bridge. Due to the danger, the electricity connection was disconnected there.
