The Los Angeles Chargers breathed new excitement into the team when former Michigan and San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh was signed on as the new leader in L.A. Harbaugh brings with him a wealth of knowledge and quirky sound bites that reverberate through the NFL.

Harbaugh offered up his latest sound bite when he was speaking to reporters about the return of Justin Herbert. Harbaugh spoke about Herbert returning to reporters, stating, “I thought I heard music … voice of angels, maybe”
Though Harbaugh has his own unique style of remaining excited, it would be hard not to be happy to get the franchise quarterback back on the field.
Herbert has not practiced since July 31 when he suffered an injury to the plantar fascia in his right foot. The result was the signal caller remained in a walking boot for the past two weeks, but that boot is no more.

Herbert stepped back on the field today and participated in 7-on-7 drills. Though he has not yet graduated to 11-on-11 drills, he was seen at practice zipping the ball around. According to Chargers reporter Eric Smith, “Herbert simply zipped the ball all over the field in 7-on-7 drills.”
Losing Herbert for an extended period would have been detrimental to the Chargers offense. The backup quarterbacks have also not been impressive, and Harbaugh recently released Max Duggan.
The Chargers also signed former UFL standout Luis Perez, who is in direct competition with Easton Stick. Stick took over in 2023 when Herbert had to have season-ending surgery on his hand.
The good news is Herbert appears to be working his way to starting in Week 1, and the Chargers will need him on the field if they are to beat the Las Vegas Raiders on Sep. 8.
Herbert dealt with multiple injuries in 2023. One of which was a fractured finger on his left hand. Despite being his non-throwing hand, Herbert had to grip the ball with a splint on.
Herbert’s second injury was far worse, as he suffered a fracture to a finger on his throwing hand. After being sidelined due to the finger injury, Herbert would end his 2023 due to season-ending surgery.

Despite the injuries, Herbert finished 2023 with 3,134, 20 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He was having a career year before his finger injuries derailed 2023.
Herbert being injured is always bad news for the Chargers, but it appears his foot injury is on its way to being alleviated for 2024. The hope now is Herbert does not deal with any lingering issues or pain.
