Christopher Bell is sounding the alarm about the difficult new layout for the 2024 NASCAR Playoffs. Bell, who secured a spot in the Championship 4 in Phoenix for the past two seasons, expressed his concerns during a recent appearance on “The Teardown” podcast with Jordan Bianchi and Jeff Gluck.
The new schedule, which features Atlanta and Watkins Glen in the Round of 16, has Bell describing the situation as “hair-raising”.
The inclusion of Atlanta and Watkins Glen in the playoffs’ first round introduces plenty of unpredictability. Atlanta, famous for its nail-biting finishes, now becomes a litmus test for drivers. Bell’s track record at Atlanta has been less than stellar, with only one top-10 finish in his Cup Series career. This raises the stakes even higher.
Watkins Glen, on the other hand, is introducing a new tire expected to be susceptible to significant degradation. Although Bell has consistently logged top-10 finishes at the Glen, the uncertainty around the new tire compounds the challenge. As for Bristol, known for its demanding nature, Bell anticipates a repeat of the tire woes that plagued the spring race.

Bell addressed these challenges:
“Well in one way it does feel a little bit safer. But the schedule, man. The schedule is just… it’s hair-raising.
“This time we start off at Atlanta. Well, we all know how Atlanta can be. We can get some people in there that, you just never know who’s going to score points at Atlanta.”
Moreover, Bell’s apprehension extends to the new tire at Watkins Glen and the expectation of a Bristol race mirroring the high-degradation tires from the spring.
“And then we go to Watkins Glen which should be a normal road course but yet we have a tire that is supposed to produce a lot of tire deg, and we don’t, that could be a Bristol race from the spring, we don’t know.
“Then we go to Bristol, which from the tire test, I think everyone is expecting it to be a duplicate of the spring race. So, we’ve got three races that are all going to be not traditional races,” Bell commented.
The restructured first round could indeed lead to a difficult few races for the likes of Bell. And the drivers may see their championship hopes dashed if they succumb to the chaos that potentially awaits them. This does mean, however, that we could get a real shake-up in the points. Who knows how this year could finish.
Despite these concerns, Bell is a talented driver. His historical performance at Bristol, including a third-place finish last season and a top-ten finish in March even amidst tire issues, speaks to his ability behind the wheel, and maybe he can keep this stint going for himself.
