The Election Commission (EC) has completed the preparations for the Mymensingh and Comilla City Corporation elections.
Promotion ended at 12 pm on Thursday. The concerned returning officers have already issued notices regarding the ban on campaigning.
Non-stop polling will continue from 8 am to 4 pm on Saturday.
It has been decided to deploy sufficient members of the law and order forces in the electoral area to organize fair polls. The organization has already formed a law and order coordination and monitoring cell comprising representatives of the home ministry and representatives of various law enforcement agencies.
Election Commissioner Md. Alamgir said that more force has been given in this election than the demand. After this, if the situation goes out of control, the voting will be stopped.
In addition to the general by-elections in Mymensingh City Corporation and Mayoral vacancies in Comilla City Corporation, elections will be held for councilor vacancies in various wards including general and mayoral vacancies in three municipalities. On the same day, general elections of 13 Union Parishads, by-elections of seven Zilla Parishads are being held for various vacancies of 187 Union Parishads.
Out of these two city corporations will vote in EVMs. And some of the other elections will be on EVMs and the rest will be on ballots.
Mymensingh City
Total voters in Mymensingh City Corporation are three lakh 36 thousand 496. Among them, 1 lakh 63 thousand 872 male voters, 1 lakh 72 thousand 615 female voters and 9 transgenders. The city has 33 general wards, 11 reserved wards. 128 polling stations and 990 polling booths.
There is only one party candidate among the candidates for the mayoral post. Joint General Secretary of Jatiya Party Shahidul Islam is contesting on Swapan Mandal plow symbol.
According to the decision of the party, the ruling Awami League has kept the candidacy open without nominating anyone. Current mayor Ikramul Haque is in the contest for the table clock, district Awami League president Ehteshamul Alam is contesting for the horse symbol, Sadiqul Haque Khan Milki Toju, adviser of the district Awami League for the elephant symbol, and Rezaul Haque Reza, a former member of the Farmers League, is contesting for the deer symbol. In the city, 149 people are contesting in 33 general wards and 69 in 11 reserved wards.
44 executive magistrates and 11 judicial magistrates are serving in this city. In addition, there is a decision to deploy 16 members of the law and order force in general polling stations and 17 members in risky polling stations. 33 mobile forces, 11 striking forces and one reserve force will perform duties in the election. Apart from this, 17 teams of RAB and 7 platoons of BGB are engaged in maintaining law and order.
Comilla City
On June 15, 2022, Arfanul Haque Rifat, general secretary of Comilla Metropolitan Awami League, was elected with the boat symbol in the third election of Comilla City Corporation. On July 7 of that year, Rifat took over as mayor. Rifat died under treatment at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on December 13 last year. Then on December 18, the post of mayor was declared vacant. Later, on January 22, the election commission announced the schedule of by-elections for the post of mayor.
The total number of voters in Comilla City Corporation's mayoral by-election is two lakh 42 thousand 458. Among them, 1 lakh 18 thousand 182 male voters, 1 lakh 24 thousand 274 female voters and 2 transgenders. 105 polling stations and 640 polling booths.
Four people are contesting for the post of Mayor in the City Corporation by-election in Comilla. The two expelled leaders from BNP are contesting with former mayor Monirul Haque Sakku (clock) and former leader of Swachha Sevak Party Nizamuddin Qaiser (horse symbol). And Awami League metropolitan organizational secretary Tahsin Bahar (bus) and city Awami League adviser Noor-ur Tanim (elephants) are contesting.

In addition, there is a decision to deploy 16 members of the law and order force in general polling stations and 17 members in risky polling stations. 27 mobile forces, 9 striking forces and two reserve forces will be on duty in the election. Apart from this, 27 teams of RAB and 12 platoons of BGB are engaged in maintaining law and order.
