Deaths on the roads increased during Eid, more on motorcycles


Road accidents happen every time during Eid. This year's Eid-ul-Fitr was no exception. In the last three days, including the Eid day, the death toll on the roads has exceeded half a hundred. Among them, motorcycle accidents are more.

Concerned people think that young people are driving reckless motorcycles during the Eid holidays after finding empty roads. As a result this accident is happening.

There are also reports of the death of three people in a motorcycle accident. School-college level students are also among them. Due to the increase in motorcycle riding during the Eid holidays, the number of deaths also increases.

According to various media reports, at least 18 people died in road accidents across the country on the day of Eid alone. Most of them are motorcycle riders. Among the dead are four in Panchagarh, three in Khagrachari, two in Narsingdi, one in Dhaka, one in Brahmanbaria, one in Jessore, three in Netrakona, one in Chuadanga and two in Narail.

Several road accidents occurred across the country on the second day of Eid, Friday and on the third day today, Saturday. Most of these are motorcycle accidents.

In addition to being killed in these accidents, many people have been injured and crippled. A total of 454 people have received treatment at the National Orthopedic Hospital and Rehabilitation Institution (Pangu Hospital) in a total of three days till Saturday afternoon. Besides, the number of people coming from different parts of the country and taking treatment in different hospitals of the capital including Dhaka Medical College Hospital is not less. Most of them are youths and young adults injured in motorcycle accidents.

Tapan Debnath, resident doctor of National Orthopedic Hospital and Rehabilitation Institute, told the media that usually there is more patient pressure in this hospital during Eid and post-Eid. So far, most of the patients coming to the hospital are injured in motorcycle accidents. Due to lack of space in the emergency ward, many have to be treated in the balcony.

According to the information provided by this doctor, 256 people came to the emergency department on the day of Eid. 76 of whom were injured in a motorcycle accident. And at least 140 patients received treatment from Friday morning to evening. 50 of them were injured in a motorcycle accident. Most of them are between 18 and 30 years.

Recently, Bangladesh University of Engineering (BUET) Road and Accident Research Institute (ARI) has revealed that Bangladesh has the highest number of motorcycle accidents among Asian countries. Out of every 10,000 motorcycles, 28.4 percent are victims of accidents in Bangladesh. After Bangladesh, 11.9 motorcycle accidents occurred in Cambodia, 11.5 in Laos, 11.2 in Thailand, 9 in India, 8.6 in Myanmar, 4.4 in Malaysia, 4.1 in Vietnam, 2.5 in Indonesia and 2.1 in Bhutan.

Regarding the motorcycle accident during Eid, Secretary General of Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Association. Mozammel Haque Chowdhury told the media that more than half of the total accidents in the country occur on motorcycles. Among them, it happens most during Eid. During this time, many people travel home to avoid traffic jams on the highway.

'Ordinarily there might be one person on a motorcycle. But during Eid, even with wife, children and myself, there is a cloth bag behind. That poses a risk to balance. This is why accidents happen more.'
