Awami League Central Committee joint general secretary and former minister Dr. Arrested in the case of murder of grocery shopkeeper Abu Saeed in Mohammadpur of the capital due to indiscriminate shooting of student-people procession in the quota reform movement. The court granted remand of 4 days to Dipu Moni and 5 days to former Deputy Sports Minister Arif Khan Joy.
Inspector Tofazzal Hossain of Mohammadpur police station, investigating officer, applied for 10-day remand for the sake of proper investigation of the case after presenting the accused in the court on Tuesday (August 20).
On this day, a lawyer on behalf of the accused applied for cancellation of their remand and bail. After bringing the accused to the dock in the courtroom, as no one was handcuffed, the pro-BNP lawyers kept shouting for the accused to be handcuffed. Accused Joy was then handcuffed. Dipu Moni was not handcuffed as a woman.
At one stage of the hearing, Joy could not say anything in the face of pro-BNP lawyers. On the other hand, Dipu Moni was standing in a corner of the dock with his head down. A few women policemen surrounded him. After the hearing, the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Sultan Sohag Uddin granted their remand.
It is known that on August 13, a person named SM Amir Hamza appealed the case in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury. Later, the court directed the officer-in-charge (OC) of Mohammadpur police station to accept the complaint as a statement. This businessman said that as a conscious citizen, he filed this case seeking justice for the murder of an innocent citizen.
The other accused in the case are former Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former IGP Abdullah Al Mamun, DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, Additional Commissioner Harun-or-Rashid and Joint Commissioner Biplab Kumar.
According to the complaint of the case, recently, thousands of students marched in the government job quota reform movement. Peaceful processions were fired indiscriminately in different parts of the country. Many students were killed and injured. On July 19, the students were peacefully marching in the 40 feet area of Basila in Mohammadpur. Police fired indiscriminately there too. Abu Saeed, a local grocer, was shot in the head while crossing the road. He died on the spot.
