Due to heavy rains in India's Bihar, Jharkhand, the country has opened all the gates of Farakka Dam today to handle the water pressure. As a result, several districts of Bangladesh are at risk of flooding.
Regarding the opening of the Farakka Dam, the Indian media News Eight reported that the amount of water released is increasing as the water level of the Farakka Dam project exceeds the limit. 1.1 lakh cusecs of water has been released from the dam due to rise in the water level of Ganga.
Farakka Dam is built on the river Ganges. It is located in the Murshidabad and Maldah districts of the Indian state of West Bengal. Again the Ganga river enters Bangladesh as Padma through Chapainawabganj district. As a result, Farakka's flood will enter Bangladesh through the Ganges and Padma and flood the area along the banks of the Padma.
The water released by Farakka may cause flooding in Chapainawabganj, Rajshahi, Natore, Pabna, Sirajganj, Kushtia, Rajbari, Manikganj, Faridpur, Madaripur, Shariatpur, Munshiganj and Chandpur on the Padma banks.
It is to be noted that due to India's opening of Dambur and Ghazaldoba dams, floods have occurred in Feni, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Comilla and Chittagong regions of Bangladesh.
