DNC 2024: Day 2 Schedule Revealed as Democrats Reconvene in Chicago

After an opening night of festivities that went well past midnight, the Democratic National Convention resumes Tuesday with highly anticipated appearances from Barack and Michelle Obama and a “bold vision” for a Harris presidency.

President Joe Biden capped Monday’s events by walking onto the very stage where he hoped to receive the party’s nomination until exactly one month ago. Delivering a nearly hour-long speech heavy on his legislative accomplishments and disdain for Donald Trump, the president ended his keynote address to chants of “We love Joe!”

“I made a commitment to you that I would be a president for all Americans, whether you voted for me or not. We have done that,” Biden said while clarifying that “we” was in reference to him and Vice President Kamala Harris.

“Selecting Kamala was the very first decision I made when I became our nominee and it was the best decision I made my whole career,” Biden said. “We’ve now not only gotten to know each other, we’ve become close friends. She’s tough, she’s experienced and she has enormous integrity.”

Before Biden spoke, top Democrats, from former Secretary of State Hillary and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear to Representatives James Clyburn and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, all endorsed Harris from the stage. Other speakers also included United Automobile Workers President Shawn Fain, actor Tony Goldwyn and NBA coach Steve Kerr.

Harris herself made a surprise appearance Monday, speaking briefly to thank Biden for his “historic leadership, for your lifetime of service to our nation and for all you will continue to do.”

Here’s what to expect on the Day 2 of the DNC:

When & Where

Main programming will begin at 7 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. CT.

The DNC is being held at the United Center in Chicago this year.

What: Theme and Events

Tuesday’s theme is “A Bold Vision for America’s Future,” a day that is being framed not just as Kamala Harris versus Donald Trump, but “a choice between two very different visions of America.”

“While Donald Trump believes our best days are behind us, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz know the best days lie ahead,” the Harris campaign said in a statement. “Standing in stark contrast to the Trump-Vance Project 2025 agenda designed to take us backwards, the Harris-Walz ticket presents a brighter vision where everyone will have a chance not just to get by, but to get ahead.”

In the daytime, several caucus meetings are being held, including the Women’s Caucus Meeting, the Youth Caucus Meeting, the Rural Caucus Meeting, the Veteran and Military Families Council Meeting and the Interfaith Council Meeting, among others.

Who: Speakers and Performers

Speakers who are expected to speak on Tuesday include former President Barack Obama, former First Lady Michelle Obama, Second gentleman Doug Emhoff and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and Senator Gary Peters are also expected to be in attendance.
