The interview given to Indian news agency PTI at his official residence in Dhaka was published on Friday (September 6). According to the Indian media Economic Times, Professor Yunus mentioned in the interview that he will try to meet the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session.
Basically, this session is scheduled to be held at the end of this month. He also said that he will try to join a photo session with the SAARC heads of state during the session of the General Assembly. Yunus. Prof. Yunus said, 'Sure, we will try to meet (Dr. Yunus and Narendra Modi). If all SAARC heads of state come together and participate in a photo session, I will try (to meet them).'
In an interview, he said about the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), 'Although SAARC was formed with a noble purpose, it is now limited to paper and it is not working now. We have forgotten the name of the Sark; I am trying to revive the spirit of SAARC.' The member countries of SAARC are Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. On this day Dr. Yunus said, 'There has been no SAARC summit for a long time. If we can come together, many problems will be solved.'
Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus pointed out that the European Union (EU) was formed with similar goals to SAARC. This alliance has achieved a lot through mutual cooperation. SAARC has yet to achieve the same. In this context, he said, 'European countries have achieved a lot through the European Union. We also need to ensure that SAARC works. Look at the European Union, how beautifully it works. If there is a problem with Pakistan, another way can be found. But the activities of SAARC must not be stopped.'
SAARC is not very effective since 2016. The SAARC summit was scheduled to be held in Pakistan that year, but after an attack on an Indian army post in Uri in Jammu and Kashmir on September 18 of the same year, India said it would not attend the summit. The conference was later cancelled. It has not been very effective since then.
Incidentally, according to the United Nations, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi can address the session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 26. The 79th session of the General Assembly will begin on September 24 and end on September 30.
