Ex-Justice Manik in jail, egg-shoe throwing in court premises

The court ordered to send former judge AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, who was arrested by BGB while escaping to India, to jail.

On Saturday (August 24) around 4:30 pm, he was brought before the court of Judge Alamgir Hossain of Sylhet Mahanagar Hakim-1 by Kanighat Thana Police. Meanwhile, angry lawyers started protesting around him. Some threw eggs and shoes at the former judge.

Sylhet judge Alamgir Hossain arrested him under section 54 and ordered him to be sent to prison at around 4 pm on Saturday, police inspector said. Jamshed Ali said.

Eyewitnesses said eggs and shoes were pelted by the agitated crowd after ex-judge Manik was alighted from the car while being taken to the court. At that time, some youths tried to attack him. Later the police took him to the court with tight security.

BGB arrested former Justice Manik from Kanighat border in Sylhet while fleeing to India on Friday night. After being detained at the Kanighat border, Manik was questioned by the local crowd. His statement has gone viral. At that time, someone present at the scene asked him why he wanted to run away. He replied that he wanted to escape because of the fear of the administration. Then it was asked from the other side, 'You have done a lot of oppression.' In response to such questions from BGB members, Manik said, 'I have not committed any oppression.'

Former judge Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik was carrying Tk 70 lakh while fleeing through Dana area bordering Kanighat upazila of Sylhet. A video was recorded of Manik during the detention.

It can be seen in the video that BGB members want to know his identity. Admitting his identity, Manik said, I am Justice Manik. In his confession after the arrest, he said, I wanted to cross the border by talking about 15,000 taka. Later, two boys took me to the Indian border and took away all the money and mobile phone I had with me.
