Female vice chairman candidate dies of heatstroke, election postponed


Due to the death of the female vice chairman candidate of Gopalpur Upazila Parishad, Maryam Akhtar Mukta, the Election Commission has announced the postponement of the elections for all the posts of Gopalpur Upazila Parishad.

The announcement said that the first phase of the 6th Upazila Parishad is scheduled to be held on May 8, 2024 in Gopalpur Upazila Parishad of Tangail. But due to the death of a valid candidate for the post of female vice-chairman before the polling, the election for all the posts was postponed. It is also said in the announcement that the Hon'ble Election Commission has decided to complete the upazila parishad elections on June 5, 2024 in the fourth phase through re-schedule announcement. Those who had previously filed nomination papers for the post of Women Vice-Chairman will not need to file fresh nominations. However, those who filed their nomination papers earlier can be given the opportunity to withdraw. The earlier nominations for the post of Chairman and Vice Chairman shall remain in effect and the election shall be held from among the existing candidates for the said posts. Fresh nominations can be submitted for the post of female vice-chairman only.

It is to be noted that Maryam Akhter Mukta, the two-time elected female vice-chairman, died of heat stroke last Friday. Awami League founding member, Bangabandhu's close companion and granddaughter of former MP Hatem Ali Talukder Maryam Akhter Mukta was again in the election field for the same position.

Maryam Akhter Mukta's husband. Ariful Islam Arif said that his wife died of heat stroke while undergoing treatment in Mymensingh last Friday.

The District Returning Officer declared valid the nomination papers of 5 persons for the post of chairman, 1 person for the post of vice chairman and 2 persons for the post of female vice chairman in the Gopalpur Upazila Parishad election. Among them, Maruf Hasan Jami, the only candidate for the post of Vice Chairman, was elected unopposed.
