Floods in Comilla: Great damage to education system

According to the District Relief and Disaster Management Office, a loss of 3,362 crores, 14 lakhs and 73 thousand rupees has been incurred in Comilla district due to the worst floods in the history.

The education system has been greatly affected. The education life of many students is under threat. They are in danger of losing educational materials including books, notebooks, clothes. Damaged homes and educational institutions are also hampering their return to normal educational life. More than four hundred educational institutions have been affected in the entire district.

After the flood water receded in Comilla, the damage in various sectors became more evident. Apart from this, there is no education system. As the houses were under water for two weeks, many students' books and notebooks and educational materials were destroyed. It has become very difficult to procure these materials during the crisis.

The dangers of the students do not end there, many are on the verge of dropping out of education as the family's income is cut off due to the disaster. Many students are also mentally broken due to the destruction of their houses in the flood.

The students say that the books, notebooks and clothes were all washed away with the flow of flood water. In this situation, they are not in a condition to come to school and take classes.

Many establishments are currently not open due to infrastructure damage caused by the floods. There is a fear that the students will turn away from the class.

According to the District Primary Education Office, 104 primary and 205 secondary schools and colleges were affected by the recent floods. Apart from this, 123 madrasas have been affected.
