Florida Democrats are teaming up to try to turn the historically Republican state blue. Footage shared by the executive director of the Florida Democratic Party shows crowds of people travelling to the newly opened Democratic office in Orange County despite the torrid weather conditions on Sunday, September 1.
Karol Molinares, Florida deputy communications director for the Democratic Party, also shared a clip of the campaign in the southeastern state.
“Rain or shine, we’re in the streets knocking on doors and making calls across the state to flip Florida blue and elect Democrats up and down the ballot. We’re organized and we’re fighting for the Sunshine State,” Molinares wrote, sharing pictures of large groups of volunteers campaigning in the rainy weather to support Kamala Harris.
The Florida Democratic Party released new numbers on Sunday, September 1, saying the campaign completed over 1.3 million phone calls and 400,000 house visits to convince Floridians to vote this November in the presidential election.
“In the last month alone, Florida Democrats across the state have contacted millions of voters to get out the vote. We are seeing an unprecedented level of enthusiasm for the Harris-Walz ticket and we will continue this momentum as we head into the November elections,” said the chair of the Florida Democratic Party, Nikki Fried.
However, the party has some work to do to claim the state. According to poll aggregator Nate Silver, Trump currently leads in Florida by 4.7 points. Newsweek has previously reported that while Florida has been historically a swing state, it is now considered Republican as over the last 40 years, there have been only 3 instances when a Democratic candidate won: once in 1996 with Bill Clinton and two with Barrack Obama in 2008 and 2012.
Orange County has 327,599 registered Democratic voters and 218,979 Republican voters. Over 30 per cent of registered voters are, however, NPAs (no party affiliation). They could be the ones to tip the election.

The surge of support comes directly after Harris’ campaign team started a bus tour in Florida focusing on reproductive freedom. Former President Donald Trump said in a recent interview with Fox News he would vote ‘No’ on the Florida amendment that would ensure abortion rights for up to 24 weeks before the fetus’ viability.
Florida also has a direct connection to Trump as his primary residence, Mar-a-Lago, is located in Palm Beach.
As Newsweek previously reported, Florida might see a tighter race than expected as Trump’s lead shrunk since the beginning of August. Harris, however, peaked after the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
