Former Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi arrested


Awami League government's controversial former commerce minister Tipu Munshi has been arrested. RAB arrested him from Gulshan area of ​​the capital on Wednesday (August 28) late night. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Imran Khan of media wing of RAB headquarters informed this information.

Imran Khan told the media that during the anti-discrimination student movement in Rangpur, a murder case has been registered against 17 people, including former commerce minister Tipu Munshi, in connection with the death of a gold worker named Muslim Uddin Milan who was shot dead in a clash with police and Awami League leaders and activists. He was arrested in that case.

Also, a case was filed against 119 people including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the case of the death of auto-rickshaw driver Manik Mia in Rangpur on August 20 during the student-public movement. The former commerce minister was also accused in that case.

Meanwhile, on August 22, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) froze the bank accounts of Tipu Munshi and his family members. Along with that, the bank account transactions of the businesses owned by them were also suspended.

Tipu Munshi was defeated in the eighth national election in 2001 from Rangpur-4 seat on the nomination of Awami League. After that, in the 2008 ninth, 2014 tenth and 2018 eleventh national parliamentary elections, he was elected as a member of parliament from Rangpur-4 (Pirgacha-Kaunia) seat on the nomination of Awami League.

He was a member of the Standing Committee on Textiles and Jute Ministry in the 9th National Parliament, the President of the Standing Committee on the Ministry of Home Affairs and a member of the Standing Committee on the Ministry of Finance in the 10th National Parliament. In 2019, he was appointed as Commerce Minister in Sheikh Hasina's fourth cabinet.

On August 5, 2024, the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned in the face of the Non-Cooperation Movement and fled to India. The next day, on August 6, the President dissolved Parliament, and she lost her position as a Member of Parliament. Since then he was in hiding like other leaders of Awami League.
