The workers of a garment factory in Savar protested by blocking the road for about two hours demanding the opening of the closed factory. The people traveling on the road had to suffer due to the traffic jam for about 2 hours.
The workers of the local Donglion factory started protesting by blocking the Nabinagar-Chandra highway around 10 am on Sunday. Due to this traffic jam was created on both sides of the road.
The agitating workers said that several demands were presented to the factory authorities. They are not willing to accept our demands in any way. We cannot use mobiles in the factory. Due to this, even if someone in the family died in the village, we did not get any news immediately. Besides, if we see a small mistake, we are forced to sign the resign letter and get fired. If the authorities do not give any kind of assurance when they present a demand for these closures, the workers carry out the strike. Later, the authorities announced the closure of the factory for an indefinite period. Therefore, the workers are protesting by blocking the road for various logical demands, including the opening of the closed factories. The closure notice reads, Yesterday on August 25, the workers of the factory stopped work due to some illegal demands and started an illegal strike and started behaving in a disorderly manner.
They have not informed the factory authorities about all these demands.
Despite repeated requests from the authorities to remain calm, the workers went on strike and displayed disorderly behavior and vandalized the factory. At one point the officers beat the employees. Later, they locked all the officials and workers from inside the main gate of the factory. Due to their behavior, it was not possible to send the injured officers to the hospital for treatment. Due to such illegal strike and disorderly behavior of the factory workers, the factory has been closed for an indefinite period from August 26, Monday, according to Section 13 (1) of the Bangladesh Labor Act.
Workers shall receive wages and other benefits as per Section 13 (1) of the Bangladesh Labor Act during the period of factory closure. Superintendent of Police of Ashulia Industrial Police-1 Sarwar Alam said that the workers of a garment factory protested by blocking the road today for various demands. Basically, according to the rules, overtime, tiffin bill should be increased, these demands. After blocking the road for about two hours, the workers left the road after being assured by the authorities. Now the workers are discussing the matter with the factory authorities.
