The Seattle Seahawks’ 6-3 victory over the Chicago Bears on Thursday was perhaps one of the biggest disappointments of televised football in recent memory.
It was undoubtedly the worst contest of the 2024 season, as it was officially the lowest-scoring one.
Even though the Seahawks claimed the victory in this incompetent effort, the silver lining was that their playoff hopes remain alive as of Week 17.
Seattle needs to win the NFC West, in which it trails by one game, to get into the playoffs.
After losing back-to-back games prior to this week’s win over Chicago, the Seahawks lost their ability to control their own destiny in 2024. Quarterback Geno Smith weighed in on the position Seattle is currently in.
“Honestly, we shouldn’t be in this position,” Smith said, per Myles Simmons of ProFootballTalk. “That’s the main thing. Understanding that we got to control our destiny when we can, yeah, I’m going to be a big Kyler Murray fan on Saturday. If they get it done, they get it done.”

Smith will be cheering for the Arizona Cardinals to defeat the 9-6 Los Angeles Rams on Saturday night, who have one game at hand on Seattle. If the Rams emerge victorious, the 9-7 Seahawks will be effectively eliminated from playoff contention.
If the Cardinals do win, then the Week 18 matchup between the Seahawks and Rams will be for the division crown and a ticket into the playoffs.
A Cardinals win isn’t out of the realm of possibility, either. Although a lot has evolved since Week 2 when the Cardinals beat Los Angeles 41-10.
If this tiebreaker situation should arise between Seattle and Los Angeles, it goes completely without saying that the chances of a victory are slim to none if the Seahawks offense plays like it did against Chicago.
Smith mustered 160 yards through the air for zero touchdowns.
“It’s not always going to be sunshine and rainbows,” Smith said. “Gutting out a 6-3 win feels just as good as winning the Game 44-41. It’s all good getting wins.”
Given Seattle’s season is still alive, it’s not a time to highlight the negatives. Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald also painted the mundane affair in a light of achievement.
“It’s not easy, coming across the country on a short week, playing in an atmosphere like that,” Macdonald said. “So our guys deserve a lot of credit for their poise. We stuck together throughout, we faced some adversity throughout the game. Our defense just deserves a lot of credit, man. They played really hard. Even when (the Bears) made some unbelievable plays in critical moments—you got to give their quarterback a lot of credit, he made some phenomenal plays under duress. So we just kept fighting, and then you defend a blade of grass at the end of the day. Had an opportunity to win it at the end and guys did a great job.”
