The body of Ishaq Ali Khan Panna, the former general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League, has been handed over to the Meghalaya state police in India. His body was sent back through Sylhet's Tamabil Immigration Checkpost around 11:30am on Saturday (August 31).
Samrat Talukder, Media Officer of Sylhet District Police, confirmed the matter and said that Panna's relatives have left for their village home in Pirojpur with Panna's body.
Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs requested the Indian government to send Panna's body to Bangladesh following the appeal of the relatives.
After the fall of the Awami League government, Panna lost his life while fleeing to India through the Dona border at Kanighat on the night of August 24. On August 26, Umkiang police recovered a half-decomposed body inside India. However, it was not confirmed how he died.
An NDTV report citing the police said that Panna's identity was identified from the passport found with the body. The post-mortem report stated the cause of her death as suffocation. There are also multiple injury marks on the body. The post-mortem report mentions a cut and scar on the forehead.
The United News of India (UNI) reported that Panna had about two million dollars with her at the time of her escape.
According to the media, his relatives claimed that Panna had about two million dollars. However, no currency was found during the recovery of the body, said East Jaintia Pahar District Police Chief Giri Prasad.
Ishaq Ali Khan Panna was elected as Central General Secretary of Chhatra League in 1994. After the Awami League conference in 2012, he became the co-editor of the party's central sub-committee.
