Harassment of three journalists at the hands of Jamaat lawyer

It has been alleged that three journalists were 'harassed' by some pro-Jamaat lawyers in Adaltpara while gathering news. Later, Dhaka Metropolitan Hakim Hasib Ullah Piyas warned that the three journalists would be summoned to court and sent to jail. They were later released on condition of apology.

The incident took place on Tuesday (October 28) when the accused went to the premises of the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court to take a video.

The three journalists are – Dainik Kaler Kantha's own reporter Masood Rana, Ekushey Television reporter Ariful Islam and The Business Standard newspaper reporter Ariful Islam.

Bangladesh University of Engineering-BUET student Fardin Noor Parash murder case was scheduled to submit the investigation report to Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamsed Alam's court. On this day, Fardin's girlfriend Amatullah Bushra and Fardin's father Nur Uddin Rana also appeared in court. However, the investigation officer of the case CID ASP Moshiur Rahman could not submit the report. For this reason, the court fixed the date of submission of the report on November 30.

Later, when Bushra came out of the court, Kal Kanth's own reporter Masood Rana, Ekushey Television reporter Ariful Islam and The Business Standard newspaper Ariful Islam went to video it.

However, Jamaat lawyer Rezaul Haque Riaz, Rokon of Hatirjheel police station and lawyer Aktaruzzaman Dalim prevented them from making the video. The lawyers got even more angry when the journalists said they were doing the video for professional reasons. At that time they were cited to take the three journalists to the judge.

Then the journalists said that they were taking pictures of the accused outside the court. Court permission is not required to take pictures or videos of the accused.

The lawyers present at these words surrounded them from all sides in front of the court of Metropolitan Hakim Hasib Ullah Piyas of Dhaka. At one point, lawyer Aktaruzzaman Dalim 'took away' a journalist's mobile phone. At that time, he saw Nur Uddin Rana, the plaintiff in this case, and started threatening him

Then Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Piyas summoned these three journalists to the court. At that time, lawyer Rezaul Haque Riaz 'ran away'. Then the judge put the three journalists in the dock

The judge addressed the journalists and said, introduce yourself. After knowing the identity of the journalists, the judge said, you have created a commotion in front of the court. It is now 11:38, you will be sent to jail. There will be no more talk. Take all your mobile phones.

After a couple of minutes, the judge said, I will release you if you apologize unconditionally. Otherwise go to jail. There is no discount.

The court allowed the three journalists to be released after tendering an unconditional apology.

Lawyer Aktaruzzaman Dalim was contacted regarding the complaint.

The Court Reporters Unity (CRU), an organization of journalists working in the court, has protested and strongly condemned the incident.

The president of the organization, Liton Mahmud, told the media that the attack on journalists is highly condemnable. On that day, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Piyas did not behave unprofessionally, which damaged the image of the court or caused disruption while collecting news outside the court. ists have only performed their professional duties. ists admitted to harassment by Jamaat lawyers there. At that time, the atmosphere in the court was spoiled by the uproar of those lawyers. which has video footage. Without taking these into consideration, the judge of the concerned court became overzealous and threatened to send the three journalists to jail.

He said such behavior is not desirable for a judge. Which is very reprehensible. I demand departmental action including removal of that judge. We will make a written complaint to the Chief Justice in this regard.
