In Shariatpur's Damudya clinic, there have been allegations of maternal and newborn deaths due to negligence on the part of the authorities. Later, angry relatives ransacked the clinic.
The incident of vandalism took place at Happy Clinic of the upazila on Thursday (August 29) night.
Relatives of the patient said that Akalima Begum, wife of Anwar Hossain of East Damudya area, went into labor at midnight on Wednesday (August 28). Later, relatives brought him to Happy Clinic in Damudya Bazar area. Although there was no doctor in the hospital at that time, senior nurse Sohana admitted the patient. Akalima gave birth to a baby boy early on Thursday.
Shortly after birth, the newborn becomes ill. Akalima's physical condition also worsened. Later, around 9 am, the on-duty doctor of the clinic sent him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Later, Akalima died as a newborn in the afternoon and under treatment at night. The patient's relatives ransacked the hospital at night, alleging negligence on the part of the authorities.
Akalima's brother Kaushar complained, 'When I brought my sister to the hospital, there was no doctor. They admit patients without doctors. When we repeatedly asked about the doctor, the director of the clinic misbehaved with me. At one point the doctor came and saw my sister's condition and sent her to Dhaka Medical. Later my niece and sister both died. Some of these are due to the negligence of the hospital authorities. We want justice for this.'
When asked, Abdur Sattar, director of the hospital, said, 'The senior nurse did not tell us anything about the patient's admission. In the morning, after the delivery of the baby, he saw excessive bleeding and informed us. Later, the doctor quickly sent him to Dhaka.
In this regard, Damudya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Emarat Hossain said, 'We came to the spot after getting the news. I came and saw that the patient's relatives vandalized the ground floor of the clinic. If a written complaint is received, action will be taken subject to investigation.
Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Sheikh Mostafa Khokon said, I will look into the matter if I receive a complaint. An inquiry committee will be formed. Action will be taken against the guilty if the investigation finds the truth of negligence.
