India wants to ensure safe passage of Indian-flagged or India-bound ships through the Strait of Hormuz. In return, Iran has demanded that India release the three tankers seized in February. Discussions are going on between the two sides. Three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters this information.

India seized three Iranian-owned tankers near its territorial waters. Indian authorities alleged that the vessels disguised or changed their identities and were involved in illegal ship-to-ship transfers of goods at sea.

According to the source of a related Iranian official, Tehran has also requested the supply of certain medicines and medical equipment. According to the source, the Iranian ambassador in New Delhi held a meeting with the officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India on Monday to discuss the issue.

Reuters did not immediately respond to requests for comment from India's Ministry of External Affairs, the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi and Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to Indian officials, Iran recently allowed two Indian liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. One of them returned to West India yesterday.

Since the outbreak of war in Iran, shipping on both sides of the strait has come to a near standstill.

When asked about the talks to ensure the safe movement of Indian ships, Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Monday that the recent move was a reflection of the two countries' “long-standing communication and mutual relations”. He said in a regular press briefing, nothing is being exchanged in exchange for these talks.

Since the US and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, Tehran has been retaliating throughout the region. As part of this, ships traveling through the Strait of Hormuz were also attacked. Three Indian sailors were killed and one went missing.

India said on Monday that at least 22 Indian-flagged ships and 611 Indian sailors are currently in the Persian Gulf. An Indian source said six of the vessels were carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). India is interested in getting these ships through first to meet the shortage of cooking gas.

About 90 percent of India's total LPG imports come from the Persian Gulf region.
