Internet Obsessed With How Woman Is Learning Spanish—’Better Than Duolingo’

There are many reasons why an American may want to learn Spanish—after all, the Hispanic population is the largest minority group in the United States. But one woman’s quest to learn the language has gained widespread attention on TikTok.

Racking up 2.2 million views, Natalie Crockett (@natttcrock) shares her journey to mastering the language for a rather unusual reason—she wants to prevent her unborn son and her Mexican husband from speaking behind her back.

The video, which has garnered 274,000 likes, shows Crockett confidently sitting in a chair with a thick Spanish textbook in hand. Throughout the clip, she shares practical tips on how English speakers can easily transition into speaking Spanish. Crockett breaks down the language with enthusiasm, showing just how simple it can be to pick up.

“If the word ends in O-R in English, it most likely sounds the same in Spanish,” Crockett explains, using the word “doctor” as an example. She emphasizes the pronunciation, demonstrating how adding a slight accent can make the word sound more authentically Spanish.

Moving on to other word endings, Crockett adds, “If the word ends in B-L-E, like cable, it’s the same in Spanish; you just say it differently.” Her enthusiasm builds as she realizes how much of the language she’s already grasped.

Crockett continues her lesson with a playful tone, declaring, “If the word ends in I-C, you just add an O!” She provides examples like “public” and “romantic,” which become “público” and “romántico” in Spanish.

She doesn’t stop there. “E-N-T, like president, or A-N-T, like important—just add an E at the end,” she says, visibly excited by the simplicity of the rule.

Her excitement peaks as she exclaims, “This is so exciting!” Her joy in learning the language is palpable, making the video not just informative but also entertaining.

The clip wraps up with a short quiz from her husband, who challenges her to form a sentence using her new knowledge. Without hesitation, Crockett confidently responds in Spanish, “El presidente es importante,” nailing the sentence with ease.

Crockett’s video has resonated with viewers, not only for its humorous undertone but also for its relatable portrayal of the struggles and joys of learning a new language. Her determination to keep up with her bilingual family is both admirable and entertaining. It’s clear that her followers are eager to see more of her linguistic journey which will be useful both in and out of the family home.

In 2021, the second most common language spoken at home was Spanish or Spanish Creole, with over 41 million speakers. Additionally, there were 3.5 million Chinese speakers (including both Mandarin and Cantonese), 1.7 million Tagalog speakers, and 1.5 million Vietnamese speakers in the country that year, according to Statista.

So it’s no wonder the comical clip, which has turned into a series, has gained so much attention.

One user praised, “This is better than Duolingo,” and another wrote, “I know Spanish and I was still mind blown by this information.”

“Girls I need you to teach me just like this. You keep it interesting,” said a third commenter.
