Israel and Hamas, the armed group that controls Gaza, have agreed to the first phase of the peace plan proposed by former US President Donald Trump. The deal is seen as a major step forward in reaching a negotiated settlement to end two years of bloody conflict.
Trump confirmed the matter in a message on his own social media 'Truth Social' on Wednesday (October 8). “I am very proud to announce that both Israel and Hamas have signed the first phase of our proposed peace plan. The hostages will be released very soon and Israel will withdraw its troops from Gaza,” he said.
Meanwhile, the mediator country Qatar has also confirmed the signing of this agreement. “According to the agreement, fighting in Gaza will cease, hostages and prisoners will be released, and there will be no more obstacles in the delivery of aid,” Majed Al Ansari, spokesman for the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in a post on social media 'X'.
Negotiations for the deal began on October 6 in the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh, attended by delegations from the United States, Israel, Hamas, Egypt and Qatar. Earlier, on September 29, Trump announced a new plan for a cease-fire in Gaza at the White House.
At first Hamas did not agree, but later on October 3 they voted in favor of the agreement. Then the next day on October 4, Trump ordered Israel to stop attacking Gaza. After long negotiations, both sides finally signed the first phase of the peace agreement.
Trump also hinted at a trip to the Middle East. Talking to reporters, he said, “Discussions are going well. If everything goes well, I may go to the Middle East at the end of this week. Probably on Sunday.”
