At least 40 people were killed in a military airstrike during the Thadinggyut full moon festival and an opposition protest in central Myanmar's Chaung U township on Monday evening. Children are also among the dead.
French news agency AFP reported this information in a report on Tuesday (October 7).
According to reports, anti-junta protests were organized in the central city of Chaung U on Monday evening alongside Buddhist festivals. A woman member of the event's organizing committee said hundreds of people had gathered in Chaung U town for the Thadingut Purnima festival in the evening. At that time, people participating in the festival started protesting against the junta rule. Just then, the military threw bombs at the protesters.
The woman, who did not want to be named for security reasons, said at least 40 people were killed by two bombs during the festival and anti-junta protests on Monday around 7pm. Another 80 people were injured in the bomb blast.
He said the committee members warned people about the attack. Because of this, about one-third of the people manage to escape. But moments later a motorized paraglider flew in and dropped two bombs on the venue.
The woman said that the children's bodies were dismembered by the bomb. Till Tuesday morning we were collecting human body parts, pieces of flesh and limbs scattered around the blast site.
Another resident of Chaung Woo area was present at the event on Monday. He confirmed the death toll in the bomb blast. He said people started running after seeing the paraglider flying overhead. And just then two bombs were dropped.
“Two of my comrades died in front of me,” he told AFP on condition of anonymity. Many more were killed before my eyes.
Myanmar's local media also confirmed the death toll of 40 people in the attack by the military junta. However, a spokesman for Myanmar's junta government was not available for comment on the attack as of Tuesday night, AFP reported.
Myanmar's military has been wracked by civil war since it seized power in a coup in 2021. The democrats of the country are fighting against the military junta in alliance with various armed ethnic groups.
Meanwhile, Myanmar is scheduled to hold national elections on December 28. The country's junta government says the upcoming elections will pave the way for national reconciliation. However, Myanmar's rebels have already threatened to block the upcoming elections, calling them rigged.
