Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs Provides Huge Injury Update Ahead of Week 1

The Detroit Lions will kick off their 2024 campaign on Sunday Night Football against the Los Angeles Rams in a rematch of last year’s NFC Wild Card Round.

The two teams will look to put on a show in front of the football world in primetime, and it appears both sides will be healthy for the most part. Both teams are dealing with injuries, but none may be more stinging than Lions Pro Bowl running back Jahmyr Gibbs.

Gibbs spoke to ESPN’s Eric Woodyard and said that he will be ready to go for Week 1.

“I’m good. I’m straight. I just had a little tweak,” Gibbs said. “We were running routes, and I ran a go and reached out for the ball and probably overstepped or something.”

Gibbs also added that he feels about “98-100 percent.”

The 22-year-old tweaked his hamstring during a night practice on Aug. 12.

Gibbs will enter his second NFL season after an incredible rookie campaign in 2023. As a rookie, he was named to the Pro Bowl after rushing for 945 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also contributed to the passing game, recording 316 receiving yards and one touchdown. Gibbs was also named a finalist for the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year and played a crucial role in leading the Lions to their first NFC Championship game since 1991.

The running back also mentioned that he feels “more confident overall” as he enters his second season, and his team looks to take the next leap in 2024.

“I’m hoping we have a pretty good year,” Gibbs said. “I’m just more confident, know the offense more, so it helps a lot with everything that’s involved.”

Gibbs also mentioned how vital it is for him and his fellow offensive teammates to better grasp the dynamic Lions offense.

“I will go back and say it again, understanding the offense better — me, Jamo, and Sam — because Jamo, that was his first year really playing,” Gibbs said. “All three of us, understanding the offense, clicking on all cylinders, I think it’s going to work out perfectly.

“We rely heavily on the run game, so I think, through us and what we do on a consistent basis. So it’s being consistent every week and just doing good every week on our landmarks and what we’re supposed to do. I think after that, everything will take care of itself.”

Gibbs and the Lions will look for continued and sustained success moving forward.
