Recent data compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau, drawing on figures from 2020, has revealed which states are home to the most same-sex couples.
According to the census, 0.8 percent of U.S. coupled households comprised male same-sex pairings, and a further 0.9 percent were made up of female same-sex couples.
Higher percentages of male and female same-sex couples were present in the West Coast, the Northeast and Florida. These were often in close proximity to each state’s population centers – most counties featuring in the top 10 lists had large populations.

Interested in other ways that U.S. states compare? Newsweek has mapped which states have the highest life expectancy.
Hawaii led the country in this regard, with the highest life expectancy of 80.7 years. The state’s residents benefit from a combination of factors, including a relatively low obesity rate of 25 percent, one of the lowest in the nation.
Mississippi had the lowest life expectancy at 71.9 years. The state had an obesity rate of 39.1 percent, one of the highest in America.
Newsweek has also mapped which states are considered the healthiest, according to data compiled by America’s Health Rankings
The top five ranked states, in order, were New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut and Minnesota.
Conversely, the states with the greatest room for improvement, according to the data, were Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Alabama.
Dr. Ira Wilson, professor of medicine at Brown University, told Newsweek that a variety of factors drive health-related disparities, such as longevity, between U.S. states.
“If you look at maps of the United States that color code states for all kinds of things, what you’ll see is a surprisingly consistent story,” he said.
“[The disparity is] driven by social and economic factors, which are far beyond healthcare. They’re driven by history, by income.
“When you add on to it low quality health and healthcare infrastructure you’ve got a double whammy.”
