Lando Norris triumphed at the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix, clinching his second career victory with a remarkable 20-second lead. This exceptional performance at the Zandvoort circuit, a notoriously challenging track, not only surprised fans but also exceeded the expectations of McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella.
The race began with high drama as Norris, starting from pole position, initially lost the lead to Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. However, Norris quickly recovered, operating a car that is arguably now the fastest on the grid.
By lap 18, Norris had regained his leading position, setting the stage for a dominant remainder of the race.
Meanwhile, Verstappen struggled with tire performance. “My tires are numb,” he admitted via the Sky Sports F1 broadcast.

Norris’s teammate, Oscar Piastri, faced a tougher race, entangled in traffic and missing out on a potential podium finish despite showing promising pace. Stella, talking with Sky Sports F1 after the race, commented on his drivers’ pace:
“It’s a bit of a shame with Oscar that he got stuck in traffic. He deserved a podium today and could have attacked Verstappen. This didn’t materialize, but it’s very promising for future races.”
Reflecting on Norris’s unexpected victory, Stella spoke with immense pride:
“It’s beyond expectations. We knew the car was performing well but today was a positive surprise in terms of how fast it was,” Stella said. “It’s great that Lando could capitalise with a dominant victory.”
He continued, thanking his British team for their hard work up to this point which has seen them rise from lower-midfield last year to the front of the grid today.
“I want to take the opportunity to thank all the men and women at McLaren. They made such an amazing job, not only throughout the season but more recently for the upgrades for this weekend that have put us in a strong and exciting position for the future.”
Verstappen and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc rounded out the podium, with the latter taking third place after strategizing his way past competition.
Lando himself seemed confident in his in-race communications, admitting:
“From quite early on, from lap six or seven, I expected Max to start pushing and open up a gap and he never did.
“From that point I felt we were in the fight. He seemed to keep dropping off and my pace was getting better.
“I could get comfortable and push.”
