MJ’s Event Services has taken a groundbreaking step in sustainability by launching a range of event furniture made from recycled Rewind event carpet, extending the lifecycle of event materials and setting a new standard for sustainable furniture production within the events industry.
Jennifer Bishopp, COO of MJ’s Event Services, explained, “The concept emerged after we exhibited at an event last year, only to find the furniture on the stand underwhelming. A passing remark sparked a game-changing idea—why not create high-quality, reusable furniture from recycled event carpet?
“Unlike traditional exhibition carpet, which is often seen as disposable waste, we have always viewed Rewind as a valuable resource. Recognising that the polypropylene (PP) composition of Rewind made it ideal for plastic recycling, we set out to transform post-event carpets into durable, design-led event furniture.”

While MJ’s expertise is in event flooring, the journey into plastics and furniture design required a steep learning curve. MJ’s had to navigate various PP blends and processing techniques to ensure durability and aesthetics met the needs of the events industry.
MJ’s partnered with Future Makers, a creative studio and innovation hub based in Nottingham, that is pioneering the ‘Plastic Revolution’ by keeping plastic circular, transforming it into artistic, valuable, and practical products, and keeping it out of the waste stream.
Traditional event furniture is often low-cost, low-value, and non-recyclable, frequently imported over long distances. By manufacturing locally in the UK from event carpets used in the UK, MJ’s significantly cuts transport emissions and material waste. Unlike conventional furniture that includes mixed materials, screws, and brackets, the new furniture is made entirely from polypropylene, allowing for seamless end-of-life recycling.
The prototype furniture, showcased at International Confex, blends Rewind carpet with post-industrial PP waste (such as recycled food packaging film waste). This distinctive finish highlights the sustainable origins of the material while providing a stylish, functional solution for event spaces.
Keith Swain, general manager at MJ’s, unravels the numbers behind Rewind, “Across three major UK events, International Confex, the Event Production Show and the PA Show, we have supplied 19,000m² of Rewind event carpet, equivalent to 4,370kg of recycled material.
The environmental impact is significant, including:
CO₂ savings of approximately 14.25 tonnes
Water savings of around 3,230 litres
Potential to manufacture 168 chairs from recycled material
“As demand for Rewind grows, the ability to close the loop—turning post-event carpet into high-quality, reusable furniture—will become a defining feature of sustainable event production,” concluded Swain
“We’re incredibly excited about the possibilities this opens up for the events industry,” added Bishopp. “We’ve always seen Rewind as more than just carpet—it’s a resource with incredible potential. Now, we’re proving how it can be repurposed into something sustainable, practical, beautiful, and truly circular.”
The initiative underscores MJ’s commitment to continuous innovation and sustainability, ensuring that event materials aren’t just disposed of, but transformed into valuable assets for the industry.
