Iran's President Ibrahim Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash. The country's foreign minister and the governor of East Azerbaijan who were with him also did not survive. They went missing in a helicopter accident on Sunday (May 19). Their deaths were confirmed on Monday (May 20).
After the death of President Raisi, the question is who will be the next president of the country? According to Iran's constitution, Raisi's death will be succeeded by current First Vice President Mohammad Mokhbar. However, in this case, the approval of the supreme leader of the country, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, will be required.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei played the role of head of state in Iran. After that, the power belongs to the president. He is considered as the head of government. According to the country's constitution, elections must be held within the next 50 days and a new president must be chosen if the post of president becomes vacant.
President Ibrahim Raisi appointed Mohammad Mokhbar as Vice President in August 2021. Before being appointed as vice president, Mokhbar spent 14 years as the head of Setad, Iran's state charity. Under Mokhbar's leadership, Setad developed Iran's coronavirus vaccine 'Koviran Barekat' during the Covid-19 pandemic.
