At least more than 2 thousand people have been buried under the ground in a terrible landslide in Papua New Guinea. The government of Papua New Guinea confirmed this in a letter written to the United Nations.
The Papua New Guinea disaster center has written a letter to the United Nations office in Port Moresby on Monday (May 27), news agency AFP said.
The letter said, 'Six villages in remote Mulitaka in Porgera-Paila district of Nga province in the north were hit by landslides. More than 2,000 people have been buried alive.
The landslide occurred in the remote countryside of Nga province last Friday morning. Most of the people were sleeping at that time. Papua New Guinea's disaster office said numerous houses collapsed as a result of the landslide. Numerous crop farms and orchards were damaged. It will have a major impact on the economy.
On Monday morning, after receiving the letter, UN officials said, 'The main road near the Porgera mine has been completely blocked. Rescue workers are trying to remove the debris. But the situation did not improve much.
Earlier, Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape said in a statement, “The area where the landslide occurred is a very remote area. We have already formed a joint team of disaster response forces, police and army to carry out rescue operations. Besides, the government officials have been instructed to rescue the body from the mud pile, cremate and conduct relief activities.
Porgera gold mine is located near Kaokalam village. It is believed that the collapse happened due to unplanned gold mine digging.
