A murder case has been filed against 119 people including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in connection with the death of van driver Manik Mia in Rangpur during the quota reform movement.
Besides, the names of Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former IGP Chowdhury Abdul Al Mamun have been mentioned in that case. Most of the accused are high-ranking police officers, former parliamentarians and activists of the Awami League and its subsidiary organizations.
On Monday (August 19), the mother of the deceased Manik, Noorjahan Begum filed a murder case in the Rangpur Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court.
Later in the afternoon, the court judge Raju Ahmed Babu took up the case.
Advocate Alauddin, the lawyer of the plaintiff side of the case, said that the court has ordered to start the proceedings of this case after the cases filed against the students in the quota reform movement are settled by August 31.
The other accused in this case are former commerce minister Tipu Munshi, former Mithapukur MP Zakir Hossain Sarkar, former woman MP Nasima Zaman Bobby, Awami League central leader Rashek Rahman, former Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Moniruzzaman, Additional Police Commissioner Uttam Kumar Pal, 32. Ward No. Councilor Shahadat Hossain, dismissed Ward No. 15 Councilor Zakaria Alam Shiplu along with senior police officers and local Awami League leaders.
Earlier on Sunday, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Law Minister Anisul Haques were charged in three separate cases related to the murders of Begum Rokeya University English Department student Abu Saeed, engineer Abdullah Al Tahir and fruit trader Mirazul Islam Miraj. A case has been filed against 78 people in Rangpur court.
It is to be noted that on July 18, there was a clash with the police in Tajhat police station area at the modern intersection of Rangpur city with students agitating for the quota reform. On this day, Manik Mia of East Ghaghat Para area of the city died while undergoing treatment in the hospital after being shot.
