Muslim Chowdhury is the new chairman of Sonali Bank


The government has appointed former finance secretary Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury as the director and chairman of the board of directors of state-owned Sonali Bank. He will serve in this position for the next three years.

The Financial Institutions Department of the Ministry of Finance issued a notification in this regard on Wednesday (August 28).

It stated that the appointment of former Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) and former Finance Secretary Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury as Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sonali Bank Plc for a period of 3 years from the date of his joining, as per the provisions of the Bank Companies Act, 1991, along with the approval of Bangladesh Bank, is required. Instructions are requested for acceptance.

The notification also said that the date of joining the Board of Directors of Sonali Bank Plc as Director and Chairman of Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury was also requested to inform this department.

Incidentally, Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury joined the Audit and Accounts Cadre of Bangladesh Civil Service as a 1984 batch officer. He has served as Controller General of Accounts, Controller General of Defense Finance and Deputy Secretary, Joint Secretary and Additional Secretary in the Finance Department. He is the former secretary of finance department. Muslim Chowdhury was a director of Bangladesh Krishi Bank, Sonali Bank Limited (also acting chairman), Titus Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited, Eastern Refinery Limited and Dhaka BRT Company Limited.

Besides, he has held various responsibilities including council member of ICMAB and National Heart Foundation. He has made important contribution in reforming the financial sector of Bangladesh and its institutionalization. He received the 'Public Administration Medal 2017' in recognition of his contribution to the implementation of e-governance in the public financial management sector. He was sworn in as the twelfth Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of Bangladesh on 17 July 2018. Retired on 26 July 2023.
