16th December – Great Victory Day, an unforgettable glorious day in the history of independence of Bangladesh. On this day in 1971, Bengalis broke the shackles of subjugation and got their first independence. An independent sovereign country named Bangladesh was born on earth. Monday is the 53rd anniversary of the victory of Bangladesh.
On the night of March 25, 1971, the invading forces of Pakistan brutally massacred the sleeping common people of this country. When they became obsessed with the demonization of genocide, Bengali resistance started. The brave children of the country rushed to the battlefield to face the enemy. They had no combat training, no advanced weapons. But everyone was ready to give their lives for the country.
After nine months of bloody liberation war, sovereign Bangladesh was born on December 16, 1971.
Commemorating the moment when Pakistani forces surrendered and Bangladesh became an independent state on the world map, the Victory Day celebrations will begin with 31 gun salutes. On Monday morning on the occasion of Victory Day, the President first visited the Martyrs Monument of Savare National Memorial. Sahabuddin and then the chief advisor. Muhammad Yunus will present the wreath.
Later, the memorial will be opened for wreath laying in tribute to the martyrs of various political parties, socio-cultural and professional organizations and educational institutions.
The national flag will be hoisted across the country including government, semi-government, autonomous and private institutions. Important buildings and structures will be illuminated.
The Great Victory Day program will be held through discussion meetings and milad and doa mahfils. Monday is a public holiday.
On the occasion of the day, leaders of various socio-cultural organizations and political parties including BNP have given separate messages. They will pay deep respect to the martyrs of the liberation war and pray for the souls of the deceased.
On the eve of Victory Day, the President and Chief Adviser greeted the countrymen in separate messages and paid deep respect to the martyrs of the Liberation War.
In his speech, the President said, 'A culture of absolute tolerance and mutual respect should be developed among political parties. So let's be inspired by the spirit of the anti-discrimination movement of 2024 to build a discrimination-free country and contribute more from our respective positions in realizing the goals of the liberation war and establishing a society free from exploitation. Let's take the country and the nation further on the path of development and prosperity, build a developed and prosperous new Bangladesh – this is my hope on the Great Victory Day.' The President said, 'I think that the dream of the people of this country to build a non-discrimination and corruption-free Bangladesh through the mass uprising of the students in the month of July-August this year will be realized soon. Bangladesh, the country of heroes, will be established in the heart of the world – Insha'Allah. He said, 'On this day of victory, I remember with deep respect the brave martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the liberation war, whose freedom was earned by their supreme sacrifice. I gratefully remember all the national leaders, brave freedom fighters, two lakh mothers and sisters, organizers-supporters of the liberation war, foreign friends, family members of war victims and martyrs from all walks of life, who directly and indirectly contributed to our victory. I also remember those who were martyred in various democratic movements including the anti-discrimination movement. The nation remembers their contribution with respect.'
In his speech, the Chief Adviser said, 'On this day, we remember with respect the brave martyrs of our freedom struggle and honor their sacrifices. The interim government formed through the mass uprising of the students-workers-people is promising to work together to build a developed, prosperous and well-governed Bangladesh. In his speech on the eve of Victory Day tomorrow, he said, “We are determined to develop and strengthen the country and enjoy the full benefits of independence.” Chief Adviser said, 'Victory Day is not only a source of our pride, it is also our oath day. Our oath is to remain united, protect the sovereignty of the country and hold the spirit of the liberation war.'
Dr. Victory Day as a very glorious and memorable day in the history of Bangladesh. Yunus said, through the victory in the Great War of Liberation on December 16, 1971, we got the taste of freedom and our own identity as a nation. The Chief Adviser pointed out, 'In exchange for the blood and sacrifice of lakhs of martyrs, we got our desired freedom.' The Chief Adviser wished all round success of 'Victory Day 2024'.
Bangladesh Navy has given honorary commission to 32 junior commissioned officers on the occasion of Great Victory Day-2024. According to a press release of the Directorate of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Junior Commissioned Officers of the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer (MCPO) will be promoted to the rank of Honorary Sub-Lieutenant.
