New NFL Rule Could See Bill Belichick Inducted into Hall of Fame Next Year

There is no arguing that Bill Belichick is one of the best coaches the NFL has ever seen. His time with the New England Patriots spanned 20 years of dominance in the league and includes six Super Bowl wins, three-time Coach of the Year honors, and 17 AFC East crowns.

Belichick also owns the second-most wins in NFL history with 333. He only trails former Miami Dolphins head coach Don Shula, who finished his career with 347.

Belichick and the Patriots ended their dynasty in 2023, as the organization moved in a new direction by bringing on former linebackers coach Jerod Mayo. Belichick also moved on and was interviewed for the head coaching position with the Atlanta Falcons.

That would not come to pass, and Belichick was left without a coaching job since the 1970s. He instead altered his career to pivot to become an analyst. He regularly appeared on the Mannincast during Monday Night Football and has since been offered a regular spot on the show for 2024.

Belichick has now been without a coaching job for a year, and that is set to benefit far more based on a new rule in the NFL.

According to Ari Meirov, “The Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced that the waiting period for Coach candidates has been reduced from five seasons out of the game to just one season. Although this rule change wasn’t done specifically for him, this would allow Bill Belichick to be inducted as early as next year.”

Since Belichick has not coached for a year, he is now eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This new rule means that he could become a first-ballot Hall of Famer next year.

Though Meirov also indicated that the rule was not designed with Belichick in mind, it would certainly directly benefit him considering the way his last year has panned out.

Belichick will be on Manningcast and is also set to join “Inside the NFL” on The CW. This means that Belichick would have become an analyst and a Hall of Famer within two years of not being a coach. Though he missed out on this year’s hiring cycle, this is not a bad place to be in.

Belichick is more than likely going to return to being a head coach, as he likely wants to surpass Shula for the most wins as a head coach in NFL history — and being able to go into a hiring cycle as a Hall of Famer might lead to his getting a job even faster.
