The government has decided to suspend the notification declaring Cox's Bazar airport as an 'international airport' after 11 days of issuing the notification.
Civil Aviation Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin told the media on Friday (October 24) that an official decision has been made in this regard.
Meanwhile, Cox's Bazar Airport's International Flight Committee President Group Captain Md. Nur-e-Alam confirmed the matter and told the media that on Thursday, the chief advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus verbally ordered the suspension of the notification. An official notification will be issued in this regard next Sunday.
Earlier, on October 13, the government issued a notification giving Cox's Bazar the status of the country's fourth international airport.
As part of the development of the tourist city Cox's Bazar, the work of raising the international standard of Cox's Bazar Airport to attract foreign tourists started in the year 2021 during the Awami League government. Under that project, the runway length of the airport has been increased from 6,775 to 9,000 feet.
After the change of government, there was some uncertainty regarding the development projects of the past period, but the construction work of Cox's Bazar airport did not stop. Last March, Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus visited the construction of the airport. After that, Civil Aviation Authority officials including Sheikh Bashiruddin, Advisor to the Ministry of Civil Aviation also went there to inspect the progress of the construction work.
Despite the government's push to recognize the airport as 'international', airlines have shown little interest in operating international flights from there.
Although there are international flights from Chittagong and Sylhet to some destinations including Middle East, United Kingdom, airlines do not consider it commercially profitable to operate such flights from Cox's Bazar. Although private airlines did not show interest, Biman Bangladesh Airlines was supposed to operate flights from Cox's Bazar to Kolkata via Dhaka from this month. However, before that flight took off, Cox's Bazar lost its 'international' status.
