One jailed for Jadukata river raid, 7 detained

A mobile court judge sentenced a young man to 6 months imprisonment for his involvement in cutting the banks of Jadukata river in Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj.

Besides, in the joint operation of police, BGB and Ansar battalion, 7 people were arrested, 8 shiv machines and 4 bulkheads were seized. The operation was conducted in Jadukata river of Badaghat union of the upazila on Saturday (September 7) afternoon.

It is known from the administration sources that for a long time the Balukheko Chakra and members of this syndicate have been cutting the banks of Jadukata River and selling sand worth crores of rupees. Following this, the police, BGB and Ansar Battalion started this joint operation after getting the news that sand was being sold by cutting the river banks. Meanwhile, the mobile court has sentenced a man to 6 months imprisonment under the Sand Mahal and Soil Management Act, 2010 for his involvement in cutting the banks of Jadukata river and extracting sand with a sheave machine.

District Administration Executive Magistrate Md. Mohibullah, Upazila Executive Officer Salma Parveen, Tahirpur Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Shams Sadat Mahmud Ullah, OC Investigation Kawsar Ahmed, SI Kalam etc. were present in the raid.

Local residents complained that an organized syndicate named as a local influencer and journalist has been buying land on the banks of the Yadukata River for a long time. He is selling sand by cutting the bank. They also say that if we take sand from our bodies, no one will catch us.

There are also some local journalists involved. A few people are collecting Rs. 2 per foot in their name. They are sitting on the banks of the river and selling sand. And when the police or the administration actually got the news, they covered the wound. They are also identified but no action is taken against them. When we protest, we are attacked with lawsuits.

Tahirpur police station officer-in-charge OC Mainuddin confirmed the truth of the incident. He said that regular cases have been filed against the arrested. No discount will be given to the main owners of the sand selling cycle by cutting the banks of the Yadukata river. They will also be brought under the law.
