The farmers of Haorpar said that there will be no damage to the crops of Haor due to the collapse of Nazarkhali dam, but other haors are safe and even if the water rises further, there will be no damage to other crops in the upazila.
Nazarkhali Dam is next to Tanguar Haor in Tahirpur Upazila of Sunamganj. On Sunday (April 28) morning, the dam broke due to water pressure. Farmers of Haor also said that there was no damage to the crops due to the collapse of this dam and the paddy harvested in this Haor had already been harvested.
Tahirpur Upazila Agriculture Officer Agriculture Vid Hasan Ud Dola said, due to the collapse of this dam, there was no damage to the crops and the upazila has benefited the farmers of Shani and Matian Haor and other Haor. Now when the water rises, the river will enter the Tanguar Hao to protect the crop dams. There was no fear as the dam broke.
On inquiry it was found that the Water Development Board did not construct the Nazarkhali crop protection dam as the Tangua haorti was declared a wetland by the government. The Nazarkhali crop protection dam is Samsagar Haor, Kalma Haor, Ganyakudi Haor, Moktar Khala Haor, Lungachunga Haor, Senadubhi Haor, Ikarchai Haor, Shaldiga Haor, Ruya Haor and Ulan Haor, Chhatainna Haor. Every year the farmers of Haorpar build the dam voluntarily.
It is also known that Tanguar Haor is spread over 82 villages of Sreepur North Union and Sreepur South Union of Tahirpur Upazila of Sunamganj and North Banshikunda Union and South Banshikunda Union of Madhyanagar Upazila.
Jasim Mia, a farmer of Jaipur village in Tangua Haorpar, said that there will be no damage to Haor's crops even though the Nazarkhali crop protection dam was broken early on Sunday morning. Before this the farmers have cut the ripe paddy and those that are there are also cutting.
Saidur Rahman, the former chairman of Dakshin Banshikunda Union of Madhyanagar Upazila of the district, said that more than 60% of the ripe paddy has been cut in the different haors inside Nazarkhali Dam, now there is only paddy in the high land, it will not be damaged and can be cut before the water rises.
Tahirpur Upazila Parishad Chairman Karuna Sindhu Chowdhury Babul said that there was no damage to crops due to the collapse of this dam. Now everyone should keep an eye on the other dams of the upazila.
