Election Commissioner (EC) Md. Alamgir said that the party decision and the law of the Election Commission are not the same. Any group may have their own decisions or policies. Our law does not have any restrictive rules regarding relatives.
He said these things in response to the questions of journalists during an exchange of views with the candidates participating in the Singair and Harirampur upazila parishad elections at Manikganj District Commissioner's auditorium on Saturday (April 20).
EC Md. Alamgir said, according to the law of our Election Commission, any person who is eligible to vote can participate in the election. For that he has to be a voter of that area. In addition, candidates must meet the eligibility criteria, including not being a debtor, indigent or losing their citizenship.
Md. Alamgir said that the upazila parishad election is not an election of any political party. It is a local government election. You know, earlier anyone could participate in this election. For which no political identity was required. In between, the law was changed to marginalize the practice of political democracy. But now the law has been amended and made simpler. Now political party identification will not be required.
In response to the question whether the election will be participatory or not, the Election Commissioner said. Alamgir said, of course, this election is participatory because many are candidates as political party identification is not required. You have also noticed that many of them are not participating in the elections politically, but many of their supporters or representatives are participating in the elections in various positions.
Regarding EVMs, Election Commissioner Alamgir said that the voting will be done by EVMs in Manikganj. There is no error in EVM. However, since it is a machine it may have temporary problems. 10 fingerprints of voters have been taken, so that there will be no problem in voting even if one fingerprint matches. Above all, the commission has made all kinds of preparations to complete the fair elections.
The election commissioner said that the upazila parishad election will be held in the same way as the last national parliament election was completed. An acceptable election will be made with the voluntary participation of all.
At that time, District Commissioner Rehena Akhtar, District Election Officer Aminur Rahman and other officials of various levels were present.
