Police reform will be done as per the proposal of the UN investigation team: Rizwana Hasan

Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser on Environment, Forests and Climate Change and Water Resources, said that police reform will be brought as per the proposal of the UN investigation team.

He said this while talking to reporters in his office at the Secretariat regarding the reform of the police force after the video of a pile of dead bodies in a van was spread on social media today (September 1).

Rizwana Hasan said, if you look at the scope of the UN's fact-finding mission, it is mentioned that this incident will never happen again, so they will tell us about the security reforms to be taken.

Besides, a police commission has been mentioned. The purpose of these is that we cannot undo what has happened. So that such incidents do not happen again.

“We read when we were kids that bad people are afraid of the police, but we live in a society where good people are afraid of the police,” he said. It is not yet possible to prove that the police are the friend of the people.

In the last 53 years, the police could not become the people's police. When the party that came to power used the police for their own interests. We want to build a real 'Bangladesh Police' through reforms. But there is a huge rush for change within the police. They realize that a lot of work has to be done to present themselves as acceptable to the public.

The adviser also said that you are running the police of independent Bangladesh with the British-era Police Act of 1861. Did the British come to Bangladesh to give a public police? They did not come.

Everything has been discussed, when the police commission is formed, when we get the proposals of the United Nations, we want to discuss with everyone how we can build a people-oriented police.
