Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese broke the WNBA record for most rebounds in a single season in Sunday’s 79-74 loss to the Minnesota Lynx. Reese surpassed Sylvia Fowles’ record of 404 rebounds in 2018.

“Coming into it, I just knew my motor. Offensive rebounds and defensive rebounds is something that I can always do,” Reese told the media. “I knew it was going to translate right away. A lot of people think it’s because I get my own rebounds, but statistically it’s not. A lot of people think it’s because I’m the tallest on the court when I’m not the tallest on the court. Just being able to go down there and being able to bang, doing things that a lot of people don’t want to do. Defense and rebounding wins championships. And I’ve won championships at every level by just doing that.”

The 22-year-old posted 19 rebounds and 17 points in Sunday’s game, making the finish her 24th double-double of the season.

Reese is no stranger to breaking league records as she has already earned the most consecutive double-doubles in WNBA history.

Reese continues to make a case for Rookie of the Year as she helps the Chicago Sky reach the postseason.

Reese has an emulated a Dennis Rodman-type presence on the court. Her niche is rebounding and it’s clearly been reflected in the records she’s shattered thus far in her rookie season.

“I mean, I was pick seven. I’m not supposed to be in the rookie of the year conversations, but I am because of how hard I work,” Reese said. “And not just offensively. On the defensive end and being able to rebound. Rebounding is something that you have to want to do. It’s not something that’s easy and I don’t have anything in my life that’s been easy for me. So I really enjoy doing it.”

Reese was ranked as ESPN’s top candidate to win the Rookie of the Year accolade. Her rebounding prowess certainly sets her apart from other rookies around the WNBA. Nobody has been able to replicate her ability to consistently get double-doubles.

The Sky take on the Las Vegas Aces on Tuesday. Reese will go head-to-head with A’ja Wilson, the current MVP favorite. Wilson ranks second in the league averaging 11.8 rebounds per game, but in Tuesday’s contest fans will get to witness Reese and Wilson in a battle for boards.
