4 arrested with driver 5
The driver of MV Farhan, who was accused in the death of 5 people including 3 members of the same family after breaking the rope of Tasrif-4 due to the impact of MV Farhan 6 in the capital's Sadarghat, has escaped.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) canceled the route permits of MV Farhan-6 and Tasrif-4 following the incident. The naval police arrested 5 people including 4 drivers of the two launches. A 3-member investigation committee has been formed.
The accident took place in front of platoon number 11 of Sadarghat Launch Ghat at 2:58 PM on Thursday (April 11).
3 members of the same family are — Md. Belal (25), Mukta (26) and their three-year-old child Maisha. Their house is in Mathbaria of Pirojpur.
The other two killed are Ripon Howladar (38) and Rabiul (19). Naval Police Dhaka Range SP Gautam Kumar Biswas confirmed this information.
It is known that two launches named MV Tashrif-4 and MV Pubali-1 were tied with ropes to pontoon number 11 of Sadarghat. Shortly before 3 o'clock, another launch called Farhan was inserted into the pontoon through the middle of these two launches, the rope of MV Tashrif-4 was torn. Five passengers were seriously injured while boarding the launch. They were rescued and admitted to Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital. There the doctor declared them dead.
Joint Commissioner (Traffic) of Dhaka River Port (Sadarghat) Zainal Abedin said five people were killed in the incident at Sadarghat. The bodies of the deceased are kept at Midford Hospital.
Anwarul Islam Dolan, media cell officer at the headquarters of the fire service, said that the injured were taken to Mitford Hospital by the ambulance of the fire station. Later they died.
