The Election Commission (EC) has postponed the Sarishabari Upazila Parishad election of Jamalpur a day before the polling. Voting was supposed to take place in this upazila on Wednesday (May 8).
Jamalpur District Election Officer and Returning Officer Mohammad Shaniazzaman Talukder confirmed the matter at 5 pm on Tuesday.
He said, on the instructions of the Election Commission in Sarishabari, the election process for the sixth upazila parishad election held tomorrow (May 8) has been suspended. Further steps will be taken in this regard as per the instructions of the commission.

In the circular, it is said that in the 1st phase, Sarishabari Upazila Parishad election chairman candidate Md. Last Sunday (May 5) the EC canceled his candidature according to the provisions of the 33 of the rules as Rafiqul Islam violated the election conduct (rules 18 and 31). When Rafiqul Islam filed a writ against it, the High Court ordered his candidature to be upheld last Monday (May 6). The EC then approached the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court against the order of the High Court. Following that order, the Appellate Division issued a no-order on Tuesday (May 7). In this situation, the polling process for all posts in the Sarishabari Upazila Parishad elections will be suspended until further orders.
Upazila Election Office sources said that two candidates for the post of chairman, two candidates for the post of vice chairman and two candidates for the post of female vice chairman were supposed to contest in this election. Among them, Rafiqul Islam (Pineapple) and Taleb Uddin (Dawat Kalam) were on the post of chairman.
