School student Mahim died due to tear gas in the agitation

School student Mahim Hossain (17) went to the anti-discrimination student movement with the permission of his parents. He was injured by tear gas fired by the police there. He was being treated at the hospital. But could not be cured.

He died on Tuesday (August 20) at Kushtia Sadar Hospital due to vomiting of blood and difficulty in breathing. Later in the afternoon he was buried at the village house. Son of Ibrahim Hossain of village Bamanpara of Betbaria union of Khoksa upazila of Mahim district and Yaqub Ahmed of Chandat village was a 10th class student of secondary school.

According to family sources, Mahim was in the field since the beginning of the anti-discrimination student movement. On August 4, with the encouragement of her younger brother Rahima, she went to the upazila headquarters to join the procession. There, in the face of police obstruction, he left his companions and boarded a bus for Kushtia. Later, he went to Kumarkhali, a nearby upazila, got off the bus and joined the agitators again. At that time, Mahim fell under the tear gas fired by the police.

Some local women rescued him and helped him return home safely with first aid. But Mahim could not be normal after returning home. The pain in his face and body increased. At one point on Saturday (August 17) morning, he was suffering from high fever and shortness of breath. When the physical condition deteriorated on Monday night, he was first taken to Upazila Health Complex and then to Kushtia Sadar Hospital. He died while undergoing treatment there.

Mahim's cousin Rahima said, “My son went to the procession to make the country independent.” From there he told me all the events. But he didn't realize that he was so sick. We cannot accept his death.

Ibrahim Hossain, the father of the deceased, said that his son protested with the boys of the village. The upazila coordinators were with him. Discuss with them and decide the case and next steps.
