Schools and colleges closed in 25 districts today


Secondary schools, colleges, madrassas and technical educational institutions are closed in 25 districts of the country on Saturday (May 4) to ensure the health protection of students during the intense heat wave. The districts where schools were closed include all districts of Rajshahi and Khulna divisions (8 in Rajshahi and 10 in Khulna). Besides Dhaka and Tangail of Dhaka division, Chandpur of Chittagong division and Rangpur, Kurigram, Nilphamari and Dinajpur districts of Rangpur division.

Earlier on Thursday (May 2), the Ministry of Education announced the closure of educational institutions in various districts due to the heat wave. After that, the high court ordered the closure of educational institutions till Thursday. The next Friday was a weekend.

However, according to the notification issued earlier by the Ministry of Education, classes will continue as usual in secondary level schools across the country from Saturday. Class activities will continue in all secondary level educational institutions for six days a week (Friday holiday only) until further notice.

Meanwhile, on the same day, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education in a notification announced the closure of primary schools till Thursday. Primary and Mass Education Secretary Farid Ahmed said that schools are closed till Thursday due to severe heat wave. After Friday and Saturday weekend, classes are starting from Sunday as usual.

Earlier, in an event in Dhaka last week, Education Minister Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury said that he is against the closure of educational institutions across the country due to the temperature in a particular area. But if it goes to unbearable level in some districts, the school can decide on its own. The district primary education officer and secondary education officer can close the educational institution at the regional level after discussion.
